Merz Antique Firearms ~ Catalog of Old Guns and Related Items
The Winchester Model 1873 rifle is sometimes known as "The Gun that Won the West." When people think of an old cowboy gun, The Winchester '73 is usually what comes to mind. The only other firearm that rivals the Winchester 1873 in the stories of the Old West is the Colt Single Action Army Revolver, which coincidentally was also introduced in 1873.

W2075 WONDERFUL CASED ENGRAVED MODEL 1873 SPECIAL ORDER EXHIBITION RIFLE
Item # W2075
Cal 44-40. This rifle was made for the Paris Exhibition in 1889. It was recently found in South America along with a similar looking gun. That one was an 1886 model with the same style engraving and the same style casing. They were found by a well known Argentina dealer; Hans Schemke. Gun comes complete with Factory Letter noting all the special order features as well as a Letter done by the late R.L. Wilson that details the features, case and accoutrements. This gun was issued the Gran Prix medal at the Paris exhibition and was the only one awarded to an American Arms maker. This medal is included as well some loading tools, cleaning rod, bore light and screwdriver. A sensational gun. Factory letter states that it is a 44-40, full round bbl, button mag, pistol grip deluxe, case hardened and engraved in $4 engraving. It was shipped the same date just before the exhibition and later returned from Paris. From there it must have went to South America because that is where it was recently found. Gun is in great condition with bright vivid original blue remaining on the bbl. Receiver is case hardened that is bright and shiny with slight toning. Engraved on one side is an elk and on the other is a dog. Typical English style engraving but not typical for Winchester. Action is as tight as new. This gun is in 189k range as were all the guns shipped over for the Paris Exhibition. There is a list of about 60 of them and they were all in that range. Some were shipped back, some were sold and some just disappeared. This is a great gun and is cased in a canvas and leather English style case with compartments. Case has been relined and is still in VG condition. A historically significant firearm. One of the best 73's I have had!
Antique $ 85,000.

W504 RARE 1ST MODEL WINCHESTER 1873 MUSKET
Item # W504
This is an early 1st Model Musket made in 1876 with standard 30 inch barrel and 3 barrel bands. Only about 500 of these were mfg. Not only is it rare, it is in fine condition with most original receiver blue remaining. All barrel blue is present with slight thinning. Traces of case color remain on the hammer and lever, butt plate is mostly silvered out. Bore has good shine with deep rifling and just a few light pits. Wood is good on forearm with just the usual small dings that you would expect to see on a 140 year old gun. Stock is good with a little figure showing on the left side. There is a small hair line crack coming off the upper tang next to the screw. This musket appears to have been made from a carbine frame with the saddle ring holes plugged with screws. This musket has been over seas judging from the British proof marks on the barrel and frame. Over all this is a very fine rare old Winchester for the collectors looking to fill a hole in their collection.

W2082 UNUSUAL WINCHESTER DELUXE 73
Item # W2082
This gun was probably made for a child or a woman. It is a special order extra rapid taper 1/2 oct bbl 22" in length. At the muzzle it measures just under 6/10 of an inch. A normal 32-20 would probably be a little over 76/100 of an inch. Quite a bit smaller than standard and I have never seen another one like it. Correct short rifle forearm. Factory Letter states all these features including the checkered pistol grip stock with shotgun butt. I removed the buttplate to view and there are 3 large holes where they reduced weight on the stock. Factory Letter states 7-1/4 lbs hence the hollowed out stock which also measures only 12-1/4". Original Factory work. Buttplate fits perfectly. Excellent condition with most orig stock varnish on 3X grade wood. Sharp checkering. Bbl retains about 90% blue having toned very slightly. W744 RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 FACTORY CUTAWAY
Item # W744
Winchester's factory ledgers list these rare factory cutaway rifles as "skeleton" models. "The Winchester New Model of 1873: A Tribute" lists only eight known examples, and no more than a dozen are believed to have been made. This example, others known, has no serial number and is only marked with the assembly number 4207 on the left side of the lower tang. These cannot be confirmed by factory ledgers, but this example is very similar to the two confirmed examples that appear on the ledgers and are believed to have been used at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Like a few of the other "skeleton" rifles, it is fully nickel plated. None of the known examples are exactly the same. On this example, the cartridge elevator and buttplate door are steel instead of brass. The design allows you to see the inside of the action, the chamber, magazine tube, and even the stock cavity. Though obviously unsafe to fire, the action remains fully functional. It has the standard address, patent, and model markings; German silver blade front sight; and an adjustable sporting rear sight. It has the Third Model style integral guide rail and dust cover with serrated rear indicating it was manufactured around or after 1882. Cutaway rifles were used by Winchester to promote their arms and educate potential buyers. They were used at exhibitions and would have also been used by company salesmen. This example may have been used at one of the World's Fair such as New Orleans in 1884 or Chicago in 1893. Most all of the original nickel plating remains. There is some brown patina on in a few areas where the finish is flaked. The stock and forearm are both fine with a few pressure dents. The oiled finish looks good. The action functions fine and is crisp, and the markings are sharp. With only a dozen or so of these incredibly rare cutaways of the ever popular Winchester Model 1873 this would be a great collectable for the advanced collector or the center piece of a '73 collection.
Antique $ 27,500.

Strong case colors on the hammer with slightly less colors on the lever. Wood is in great shape and still proud to the metal with no cracks and most original oil finish. Butt plate still has a lot of original blue on it. This fine rifle hasn't seen a lot of use considering it is 133 years old! This gun was not used by the cowboys out on the range. W208 VERY RARE WINCHESTER 1873 SHORT RIFLE
Item # W208 -27-65
A 14" oct bbl in 44 cal. As with most short rifles or trappers, this one has seen some use. The receiver is a pleasing chocolate brown color with old pitting that is in-bedded into the finish. That part actually looks pretty good. The dust cover is missing. A lot of wear to the bbl. The edges of the octagons are even rounded somewhat. There is a replacement Marbles rear sight and standard German silver front sight. The mag tube is full length. A newer screw is at the end of the mag tube. There was some work done under the mag tube on the bbl. The hanger is there in the dove tail. This gun does have the correct short forearm wood. Buttstock is a bit rough but I have seen worse. Action works well. Bore is fair to good. The rarity factor certainly applies with this gun. ATF papers included.
Antique $ 8,500.
W207 VERY RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 14” SHORT RIFLE
Item # W207-27-63
Cal 32. 14" oct bbl which is confirmed with both Winchester and ATF letters. Most short rifles and trappers get used quite hard. This one is probably a bit better than most. All metal is a brown patina with some pitting along the forearm. Orig ladder sight with one ear broken off and missing the slider. Orig German silver front sight. Gun also has a dust cover. The wood is surprisingly a little better than normal. Buttstock is missing a chip on the left side. The usual gouges scratches and dings. Also a couple of letters on the right side that I can't make out what they are. Forearm is the short wood variety and in pretty good shape. One slight hairline crack coming off the front cap and numerous dings and scratches. You aren't buying this gun because it is a beauty queen but because it is very very rare!
